Two letters, allegedly linked to Nancy Guthrie’s suspected abduction, have raised doubts about their authenticity among investigators. Forensic psychologist Dr. Kris Mohandie shared his thoughts on the matter with Fox News Digital, asserting that releasing these letters to the public was a justified decision, as it might reignite interest and bring in new leads.
Police Perspective on Ransom Notes
Dr. Mohandie expressed skepticism regarding the legitimacy of the ransom note, questioning its realness but supported the idea of law enforcement exploring all possibilities. “A good investigation keeps an open mind,” he noted. Some investigators believe the ransom demands are mere fabrications, whereas others refrain from final judgments until Guthrie is found.
The investigation initially treated the ransom notes seriously, with former FBI agent Heith Janke engaging with Guthrie’s children, including “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, in addressing these notes sent by alleged kidnappers.
Letter Details Under Scrutiny
Forensic analysis emphasized that crime scene details, like the reference to Guthrie’s Apple Watch and a broken floodlight, are not conclusive evidence of any involvement by the letter’s author. Mohandie suggested these could be details that leaked out, and thus not exclusive knowledge of a potential perpetrator.
“I don’t make much out of those two details,” Mohandie stated, “They seem to be details that inadvertently could have gotten to somebody.”
The letters also indicate a tech-savvy author, making references to Bitcoin, email, and a demand of “$4 million USD”; these clues could help identify the writer, regardless of the note’s authenticity.
Doubts About a Second Letter
Dr. Mohandie questioned the second letter’s validity, which claimed Guthrie had “perished.” He cited the improbability of a kidnapper risking further exposure by sending an apology or using an uncommon term like “perished.” Despite this, Mohandie confirmed it’s crucial for police to treat these clues as potential leads.
He mentioned the historical example of the Unabomber case, where publicizing letters led to significant breakthroughs. Investigators continue efforts to find the sender and consider possible criminal charges, as demonstrated by Derrick Callella’s case, where he admitted to sending fake ransom demands.
Evidence and Surveillance Footage
The publicly released surveillance footage remains the most significant evidence, showing a scenario similar to a home invasion rather than a planned kidnapping. The suspect, captured on the video, is described as 5 feet, 9 to 10 inches tall, with an average build, and carrying an Ozark Trail backpack.
“Unfortunately, I think this case is a simple matter of a burglary gone wrong,” Mohandie remarked, stressing the importance of exploring all hypotheses.
