In 2024, during Black History Month at Chesaning Middle School in central Michigan, the only Black girl in the fifth grade faced severe racial harassment. On the school bus, she endured being called a ‘monkey.’ Other students used the n-word and likened her skin to being ‘burnt like a piece of chicken.’
