Roland Orzabal, known from Tears for Fears, has shared the emotional journey of his final years with his first wife, Caroline. In his memoir, “Welcome to Your Life,” he recounts falling in love with someone new while navigating Caroline’s battle with an alcohol-related illness.

Orzabal spoke candidly about his experiences, mentioning that honesty was crucial for him. “Somewhere out there is someone who’s going through what you went through,” he explained, wanting to relate his truth.

He spent many years with Caroline, witnessing her health decline, which took a toll on him. His turning point came in 2016 when he met Emily Rath in Colorado. Initially, their relationship appeared as a friendship between creatives, but he realized he was developing deeper feelings for her, despite being married to Caroline.

Orzabal and Caroline married early in life, in their early twenties, and had two sons. The marriage faced numerous challenges, marked by intense emotions and frequent conflicts exacerbated by Orzabal’s demanding music career. Despite seeking marriage counseling, drinking became part of their daily life, impacting Caroline’s health over time.

Doctors linked her declining condition to alcohol, but Orzabal struggled to accept this due to his own drinking habits. Her situation worsened into severe health issues, leading to a critical state marked by hospitalization and deteriorating mental and physical health.

Orzabal wrote “Please Be Happy” to express his love and concern for Caroline, yet her condition grew more secretive and elusive. In reflecting on his role as her caregiver, he grappled with mixed emotions. He also faced pressure to leave the situation with advice from others.

A significant challenge arose when Orzabal’s feelings for Rath intensified. He described a period of inner turmoil as he explored paths to move forward during Caroline’s ongoing struggles. After Caroline’s passing in 2017, Orzabal dealt with the aftermath, speaking of the complex emotions that linger after loss.

By 2019, he sought help for his own issues with Ambien, finding some peace. Orzabal compounded his narrative with sensitivity towards Caroline’s memory, leaving out more painful details to honor her.

Orzabal and Rath eventually married in 2020 and welcomed a daughter, Eula, in 2025. Rath has provided consistent support, and Orzabal suggests that Caroline would have understood his choices.

Orzabal spoke reflectively on the support he’s received since the transition to his new family life, emphasizing a belief in understanding and forgiveness.
