“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continues to dominate theaters with significant earnings. Over its second weekend, the film collected $144.5 million domestically, according to studio estimates. In just ten days, the Sony-Marvel release has generated $1.67 billion worldwide. This rapid success positions it as one of the biggest blockbusters ever. In domestic markets alone, it has earned $655.1 million, becoming the fastest movie to reach such a high total in the U.S. and Canada.
Internationally, “Brand New Day” has surpassed $1 billion. It quickly became the highest-grossing movie of the year, overtaking “Toy Story 5,” which earned $1.07 billion worldwide. The film is now the first Sony production to exceed $100 million in its second weekend, nearly outpacing “The Force Awakens,” which set the record with $149.2 million in 2015.
Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has also reached a major milestone, crossing the $1 billion mark in box office earnings. During its fourth weekend, it added $31.5 million domestically, bringing its global total to $1.1 billion. This film marks Nolan’s first to achieve such numbers since 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” It now stands as his most successful box-office hit, surpassing both “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion) and 2009’s “The Dark Knight” ($1 billion). Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” ended near this mark with $975 million.
IMAX screenings have played a significant role in the success of “The Odyssey.” It has grossed $147.3 million domestically on IMAX’s large-format screens, setting a record for the highest-grossing IMAX domestic release.
“The Odyssey” still anticipates a boost in revenue as it prepares to open in China on Friday. Both “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” have significantly contributed to Hollywood experiencing its most prosperous box-office year since the pandemic. Ticket sales are currently 18.5% higher than last year, according to Rentrak. So far, 2023 has seen five movies pass the $1 billion mark, the highest number since 2019. In addition to “Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey,” “Michael” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” have also joined the billion-dollar club.
Rentrak projects summer theatrical revenues to reach $4 billion by Monday. Previously, a season surpassing this mark signified a strong period for Hollywood, something seen last in 2023 when hits like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” boosted ticket sales. As of Sunday, summer revenue is $14.8 million short of the $4 billion mark.
Though blockbusters steal the spotlight, two comedies made attempts to capture audience interest. “One Night Only,” a romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck, opened with $5.7 million. Despite its $25 million budget, reviews were mixed, with a 46% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B+” CinemaScore. “Super Troopers 3,” the latest from Broken Lizard, debuted with $4 million.
Some limited releases achieved notable success. A24’s “Tony,” starring Dominic Sessa as a young Anthony Bourdain, earned $348,955, marking one of the year’s best screen-average openings at $58,159 per theater. Mubi’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” directed by Jane Schoenbrun, saw a strong per-location average of $50,300 across five screens.
