Cornell University has implemented a new regulation that prohibits the processing of wild game in campus community kitchens. This decision follows an incident in which two students were filmed butchering a bear in a dormitory kitchen, sparking widespread attention.

The addition of this rule directly responds to the 2025 event at Ganędagǫ Hall. Here, students, including Aaron Chin, were involved in bringing a black bear carcass they had hunted into the dorm for preparation. Chin later discussed the event on a podcast, explaining the situation that led them to the dorm kitchen instead of a friend’s house, as originally planned.

Aaron Chin and his partner diligently reviewed campus regulations before bringing the bear to the dorm, ensuring compliance with existing rules. Despite this effort, the incident led to criticisms and an investigation by the state.

After the incident, an environmental inspector from New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation examined the kitchen. The inspection revealed no violations of any codes. Nevertheless, Cornell decided to update its campus policies to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The decision reflects the university’s commitment to student safety and regulation compliance on campus.
