The Senate is working to finalize several key issues before the August break. These include government funding, confirming Todd Blanche as attorney general, and other legislative priorities. Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed the need for cooperation from Democrats to expedite these processes.

Outstanding tasks include a continuing resolution to maintain government operations beyond midterm elections, executive branch nominations, a Russia sanctions proposal, a college athletics measure, and Blanche’s confirmation vote. Thune has taken steps to initiate votes, but unanimous support from all 100 senators is necessary for swift action.

Delays could extend the Senate’s work into the next week, affecting their scheduled five-week August recess. Thune aims to accomplish as much as possible before the September rush towards Election Day.

Internal disagreements within the Senate GOP create further challenges. Concerns exist about the continuing resolution, especially a provision regarding a ban delay on certain hemp products. Sen. Ted Budd opposes language that could increase cannabis use among minors.

The confirmation of Blanche is uncertain. Sen. Susan Collins opposes him, and with Sen. Mitch McConnell absent, GOP members have limited leeway. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Bill Cassidy have not disclosed their voting intentions.

The Senate also needs to consider a House-passed budget resolution, important to the White House. It initiates reconciliation for Pentagon and farm aid funding without Democratic support. The proposal includes elements of the SAVE America Act. Thune indicated that budget resolution support is unclear and reconciliation remains complex.

President Biden has urged the Senate to stay in session to resolve these issues, with some GOP members threatening to block adjournment. Thune remarked, “It’s still a work in progress,” as leaders assess the way forward.
