Two key Republican senators, John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, have decided to end their resistance to President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Justice Department. For weeks, they resisted confirming acting Attorney General Todd Blanche but have now agreed to support his nomination.

Their main objectives were to eliminate the nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund and ensure Trump’s audit immunity doesn’t extend beyond him and his family in a lawsuit against the IRS. Blanche’s announcement on Sunday confirmed the permanent removal of the fund and the limitation of audit protection.

“We want to express our gratitude to Mr. Blanche and his staff for working with us on this, and we look forward to voting to advance his nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee soon,” the senators stated.

Their support is crucial for Blanche’s nomination to progress from the committee to the Senate floor. Without their backing, the nomination would stall.

President Trump threatened to withdraw Blanche’s nomination if the senators continued their opposition. Over the weekend, he pressured them and stated he would keep Blanche as acting attorney general and push Congress to pass a new anti-weaponization bill if the nomination failed. Tillis criticized Trump’s approach, stating it could lead to the creation of another improper fund or a bill opposed by many Republicans.

With issues seemingly resolved, Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley has rescheduled the committee vote for Tuesday. He aims for Blanche’s confirmation before the August recess, emphasizing his strong record in maintaining law and order.
