Acting Attorney General Moves Closer to Confirmation After Rescinding Controversial Fund

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is progressing toward Senate confirmation after formally revoking a contentious $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund.” He also narrowed tax protections included in former President Donald Trump’s IRS settlement.

A spokesperson for Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, confirmed an agreement. Cornyn and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., had delayed Blanche’s nomination. The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote on the nomination on Tuesday.

“My team and I have met with committee members and Senators over the past several weeks and addressed any concerns or outstanding questions,” Blanche stated on Sunday. He appeared at the confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C., on July 15, 2026.

“We have enjoyed good faith discussions, and as a result, we issue the following order and update regarding the May IRS settlement. The Department always welcomes and appreciates productive engagement with all members of Congress,” Blanche added.

Blanche’s order officially revoked the May 18 directive that established the fund. It also clarified that the tax-related protections in the settlement apply only retroactively, not to future filings.
