However, the match took a surprising turn when Rhodes inadvertently took out the referee during a Cody Cutter attempt. This opened the door for Randy Orton’s unexpected entrance. Known as “The Viper,” Orton surprised Rhodes with an RKO.

CM Punk seized the opportunity created by Orton’s interference. Punk executed a Go to Sleep move on Rhodes, securing the pin for victory. Orton, absent since his loss to Rhodes at WrestleMania 42, took further action by punting Rhodes in the head before leaving him in the ring.

This outcome has left Rhodes without a championship, while Punk turned his attention to potential challengers from the SmackDown roster. Among those mentioned were Gunther, following his win over Nick Aldis, and Trick Williams.

The decision for the new No. 1 contender is set for SummerSlam’s second night. Sami Zayn, who previously held the title before losing it to Punk, will face off against Finn Balor.
