Michigan reported cyberattacks on nine of its water systems, joining Minnesota, where over 30 systems faced similar threats. Despite this, officials confirmed all systems continued to operate safely.

Investigations and Security Concerns

The attacks are under investigation, with federal warnings linking the threats to Iranian hackers targeting critical infrastructure. A federal cyber alert highlighted attempts to tamper with operational technology.

“All systems continued to operate safely, issues were addressed by local operators, and there are no known impacts that posed a public health concern,” stated Dale George, Director of Communications at Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and other organizations are actively working to safeguard such infrastructure. These agencies are equipped to manage various cyber threats.

Challenges for Local Facilities

Digital warfare is now a common aspect of military conflict. Local water systems often lack resources to update software security, making them easier targets.

Iranian interest in US water systems dates back years. In 2016, Iranian hackers targeted a dam near New York. Recent Minnesota attacks mostly affected systems used for remote monitoring and control of equipment.

Local Impact and Responses

In Braham, Minnesota, residents were briefly asked to limit water use due to an offline water plant from a cyberattack. The city’s water quality remained intact, though the attackers disabled control systems.

Plymouth, Minnesota, restored its water system communications following an incident earlier in the week.

Political Commentary

During a Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump claimed Minnesota and its governor Tim Walz were responsible for the cyberattacks. Walz countered on social media, highlighting attacks on other states too.
