Police are actively searching for a shooter after a Walmart employee was injured during a dispute between two men in a Pennsylvania store on Friday evening.

Authorities reported that officers reacted to gunfire at the Walmart located at 50 McDade Blvd. in Darby Township, Delaware County. The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m.

According to Darby Township Police Chief Michael Sousa, investigators believe a verbal altercation erupted between two men at the self-checkout area. During the confrontation, one of the men drew a handgun and fired a shot indiscriminately.

“It looked like, from what we’re gathering with my detectives, two males get into a verbal altercation at self-checkout,” Sousa stated. “One of the males brandishes a firearm, fires a round indiscriminately and hits one of the female Walmart employees in the leg — not the subject he was arguing with.”

The injured employee was taken to a hospital. Sousa did not immediately provide updates on her health condition.

The suspect left the scene before law enforcement arrived and is still on the run. Police are examining surveillance footage to help identify the gunman.

Chief Sousa assured the public there is no current threat, stating that officers have secured the Walmart and surrounding businesses.
