Ruston Kelly, a country music artist, recently shared his commitment to sobriety following a severe setback. The 37-year-old revealed how he was three days sober after experiencing a relapse triggered by a golf cart accident in June.
In a heartfelt social media post, Kelly opened up about the struggle. He shared a gold token from Narcotics Anonymous, inscribed with ‘My gratitude speaks when I care and when I share with others the NA way.’ These chips symbolize milestones in the recovery journey.
Kelly’s candid post detailed his belief that he should avoid amphetamines since 2021. While he primarily battled this addiction, he initially abstained from alcohol and other substances like THC, believing total abstinence was necessary.
However, Kelly admitted to being stubborn. He thought he didn’t have a problem with substances beyond amphetamines and believed he exhibited control over alcohol and other drugs.
The accident was a turning point. In June, Kelly broke his arm while driving a golf cart. The injury resulted in heavy medication use, including fentanyl, morphine, and oxycodone, which quickly led to a new dependence.
Reflecting on the incident, Kelly described how the medications reignited his addiction, leading to increased consumption.
By July 26, Kelly decided to take decisive action. He revealed his determination to avoid all substances, including alcohol and THC. He recognized that any substance could potentially trigger addiction.
Kelly is focused on maintaining sobriety, emphasizing that he intends to stay clean, taking it one day at a time. His journey highlights the challenges and persistence needed to overcome substance abuse.
