In Ichikawa, Japan, Punch the monkey has become a beloved figure. Abandoned at birth, he found comfort in an orangutan plushie. Now, as he marks his first birthday, Punch receives a surge of messages from fans worldwide. His journey from isolation to companionship captures many hearts.

Early Days of Punch

Due to exhaustion, Punch’s mother left him shortly after birth. Zookeepers at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden took him in and provided the plush toy to help develop his grip, crucial for newborn macaques. Punch has since grown and now mingles with other monkeys, though he remains a popular attraction.

Global Support and Celebrations

Punch continues to draw crowds and attention. Takashi Yasunaga, the zoo’s head, reports receiving around 2,500 birthday cards from both Japanese and international fans. These messages are displayed at an exhibit dedicated to Punch’s early days, allowing visitors to watch videos chronicling his growth.

“As Punch was trying very hard struggling to live each day, his two keepers did everything they can while other staff watched over him,” recalled Yasunaga.

As Punch adapted to life in the monkey enclosure with approximately 50 other monkeys, his fame spread. Images of him with his toy went viral in February, attracting thousands of visitors to the zoo, many from abroad.

Impact on Fans

Punch’s story resonates beyond cuteness. His fight to be accepted by his peers inspires visitors. Kumi Ishizawa from Kobe discovered Punch through social media. Overcoming her illness became linked to her desire to visit him.

“He moved me … I kept on telling myself that I’m going to get well and come visit to see Punch,” Ishizawa shared. Having recovered, she finally met him in person.

Another resident, Yeye Lights, became a regular visitor after learning of Punch from her daughter in the Philippines. She frequently celebrates Punch, even bringing a cake to his birthday.

The zoo and its visitors remain grateful to the staff who cared for Punch, acknowledging their dedication and affection that helped him thrive.
