In Madison, Wisconsin, a police officer fatally shot a man who had wounded him with a knife during an attempted arrest, authorities announced Wednesday. This incident led to immediate protests with crowds converging on the state Capitol to call for justice.
Cellphone video capturing the moment, which included three audible gunshots, was widely shared on social media. Madison Police Chief John Patterson addressed the public at a news conference, emphasizing that the video was only one perspective. “I want to extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family for this loss,” Patterson stated. The deceased, aged in his 30s, was not named by police.
The fatal shooting took place on a neighborhood street filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and homes, situated less than two miles from the state Capitol. The video shows numerous vehicles stopped at an intersection where bystanders witnessed the event. Notably, this is the same street where, in 2015, a white officer shot and killed Tony Robinson, a biracial man, which generated significant protests. In that instance, the district attorney chose not to file charges, declaring the officer’s actions justified. Neither the race of Wednesday’s officer nor that of the deceased was disclosed.
Black advocacy groups in Madison expressed outrage, suggesting the victim was Black. Brandi Grayson, leader of Urban Triage, a Black community advocacy group, said, “Another Black man is dead on a Madison street, and our community watched him die before we even knew his name. That is the cruelty of state violence.” A gathering took place at the shooting scene, where individuals chanted, “Arrest the cops!” Flowers and candles were placed, and a vigil was held as the crowd swelled at dusk.
Protesters marched to the Wisconsin State Capitol, disrupting a summer concert series by demanding transparency and accountability for the involved officer. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra announced the concert’s cancellation via social media.
According to police, officers responded to calls reporting someone attempting to enter parked vehicles in the area. The suspect fled on a bicycle through nearby backyards before officers intercepted him on the street. Patterson noted that during a struggle, the suspect drew a knife, injuring an officer. A taser was deployed but failed, leading the injured officer to fatally shoot the suspect, who later died in a hospital.
The officer involved was described as a veteran, yet no further details were provided. A second officer sustained unspecified injuries, Patterson added, while the other two officers emerged unscathed. Given the involvement of police officers, the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation will conduct an investigation. The four officers on the scene will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with police department policy.
