House Committee Explores DEI Policies

The House committee is examining the effect of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies on medical school admissions and patient care standards. Lawmakers have raised questions with deans from major medical schools regarding allegations by the Justice Department. These allegations suggest that UCLA provided an unlawful advantage to Black and Hispanic applicants.

The Justice Department is also reviewing Harvard University’s acceptance of foreign donations. Concerns have been raised that these donations may have favored students from China and other countries over American students. The department indicated that foreign-funding disclosures from Harvard sparked worries about potential nationality-based restrictions on financial aid. The inquiry aims to uncover any violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prevents federally funded institutions from discriminating based on national origin.

“Every American student should have an equal opportunity to compete for college scholarships, grants, and other kinds of financial aid and benefits,” stated Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Harmeet Dhillon.

The Justice Department is probing whether Harvard is allowing Chinese donors to create scholarships that inadvertently exclude American students. Officials highlighted ongoing concerns without arriving at definite conclusions. Harvard maintains that its financial aid policies comply with federal civil rights laws.

Foreign Funding and Compliance Issues

Federal laws mandate colleges to report foreign gifts and contracts exceeding $250,000. A Civil Rights Division audit revealed Harvard had reported close to $4.5 billion in foreign funding, including over $630 million from China, its largest foreign contributor. The ongoing review by the DOJ aims to examine whether compliance with foreign donor conditions contravenes Title VI’s antidiscrimination requirements.

Harvard disclosed its adherence to legal reporting obligations and the absence of discrimination in financial aid distribution. Any scholarships specifically designed by Chinese donors to benefit students from certain countries add to the scrutiny.

Harvard faces additional investigations regarding allegations of antisemitism and admissions practices impacting foreign students. Earlier litigation saw a federal judge prevent the Trump administration from withholding billions in research funding from the university. The developments reflect an ongoing examination of discrimination and equity issues in American institutions.
