A 17-year-old from Virginia, Smit Kothari, has developed an AI-equipped website aimed at battling food waste while helping households save money. His creation, ‘Grocery Genius’, transforms pantry ingredients into custom recipes, offers inventory tracking, and provides nutritional guidance. Users can anticipate further enhancements as Kothari plans to refine the tool with feedback while attending college.
Kothari was motivated by observing his family unsure of how to use what they had in their pantry. He researched and discovered it was a common issue for many families. ‘Grocery Genius’ allows users to input their current food supplies, enabling the AI to propose three recipe options, complete with nutritional information and money-saving advice.
The platform delivers meal planning assistance and nutrient tracking, like calories and macronutrients. By utilizing its ‘Smart Pantry’ feature, users can monitor their food items and receive notifications before expiration, providing an opportunity to use or donate them in time.
Smit Kothari noted, ‘Some people are letting foods expire, wasting it, while many others are starving.’
An influencer for Kothari’s venture was a visit to Africa, where he encountered families battling hunger. This experience highlighted the need to address food-related issues. Described as a smart kitchen assistant, the website requires a simple email sign-up and is free to access.
Kothari found a valuable mentor in Christopher Tan, CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Tan emphasized the app’s potential to assist both families in need and those donating to them. Tan expressed appreciation for a tool that helps manage pantry items, preventing food wastage and highlighting donation options.
In recognition of its impact, ‘Grocery Genius’ received second place in the national Congressional App Challenge. This contest encourages students to engage in coding and potential careers in computer science. As Kothari progresses to college, he remains dedicated to advancing Grocery Genius, spurred by the feedback from users and his plans for continuous enhancement.
