The bison involved in a serious attack at Yellowstone National Park will not be euthanized, according to park officials. The wild animal will remain in the park, despite the incident that left a man injured.

Yellowstone officials stated, “no management action” will be taken against the bison, following an incident involving Carl Isom-McDaniel. The grandfather suffered broken bones that required surgery after the bison charged at him.

The event was captured on video by wildlife photographer Mike MacLeod. The footage shows the bison tossing McDaniel into the air before looming over him. MacLeod, witnessing the attack, stopped filming to assist in driving the bison away.

“Once I saw the victim in the air, I stopped filming and ran with some other men to haze the bison away and to render aid,” MacLeod said.

Neither McDaniel nor his grandson appeared to provoke the bison. The animal had already charged a group of teenagers before encountering McDaniel and his grandson.

MacLeod noted, “For some reason, the bison had it in his head he was going to attack those two.”

Following the attack, McDaniel underwent surgery and is currently recovering from his injuries. His first concern was the safety of his grandson, who fortunately escaped unharmed.

“I got to him right away, and the first thing he asked is, ‘How is my grandson?'” MacLeod recalled.

Yellowstone National Park advises visitors to maintain a distance of at least 25 yards from bison. Bison can reach up to 2,000 pounds in weight and run as fast as 30 mph. Bull bison may become particularly aggressive during mating season.

The attack has sparked numerous discussions on forums like Reddit, with many expressing shock and concern over the incident.
