A federal immigration agent shot and killed a man from Mexico in Houston on Tuesday. The man was driving a vehicle when the agent fired into his car. This marks the 21st shooting by agents involved in President Trump’s deportation efforts since his second term began in January 2025.

Nearly all shootings involved officers discharging their weapons at people in cars. The case in Houston has raised concerns about the frequency and circumstances of these confrontations.

Details of the Houston Incident

Officials from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency reported that officers stopped a vehicle around 6:50 a.m. and attempted to arrest the driver, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. ICE claims that Araujo attempted to run over an agent with his vehicle, prompting the agent to shoot him.

Federal officials have often used similar language in past incidents, describing situations where officers claimed they faced assault or injury. These claims sometimes unraveled in court later.

No immediate evidence has been provided to support the ICE’s account of the shooting. Araujo suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen, was taken to a hospital, and subsequently died, according to Rustin Rawlings, a spokesman for the Houston Fire Department.
