The divisions within the party are visible as progressives and moderates strive to determine who will replace Platner as the nominee. Despite the gravity of the situation, Platner is reportedly attempting to retain some influence over this decision.

Those aligned with Platner, as well as other Democratic allies, have publicly urged him to withdraw from the race. This follows a report on Monday detailing the accusation against him. Not only did the Maine Democratic Party call for his withdrawal, but Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also joined the appeal.

The situation has raised concerns among national Democrats. A Senate seat in Maine is seen as critical in efforts to secure control of the Senate. Platner had been associated with previous controversies, but the recent accusation has accelerated calls for his replacement before a July 13 deadline. This deadline determines whether a new candidate can be placed on the ballot in time to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins.

The primary super PAC that supports Democratic Senate campaigns stated it would reallocate $24 million in ad spending to other states if Platner remains in the race.

Additionally, Senator Bernie Sanders, an early and prominent supporter of Platner, released a statement on Tuesday. Sanders stated he had spoken to Platner about the situation and urged him to step aside given the seriousness of the allegations.

On a private call with his campaign team, Platner expressed belief that he could still influence the selection of his successor. However, he did not formally announce plans to withdraw at that time, but he suggested such a decision could be impending.
