The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) experienced a significant setback after a 4-1 loss to Belgium during the Round of 16 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This result marked the end of the team’s pursuit in the tournament. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino addressed the team’s lackluster performance post-match.

“From the beginning, we didn’t connect with the game. Even when we scored, and we scored the goal, 1-1, we conceded the next action. It was really tough from the beginning … It wasn’t our day. Not to find excuses, not to find arguments, because we didn’t show what that team normally can show, and that is a reality,” Pochettino conveyed to Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft.

Pochettino also commended Belgium, acknowledging they were superior in the match. Belgium played with aggression and efficiency, achieving four goals with only 43% possession, 15 shots, and seven on target. In contrast, the USMNT appeared disorganized and lacked the confidence shown in earlier matches. Malik Tillman scored the USMNT’s only goal in the first half through a free kick. However, the team struggled to find additional scoring opportunities.

After Tillman’s goal equalized the score 1-1, Belgium quickly took the lead again. The USMNT entered the second half with a chance to equalize yet faced difficulties. A critical mistake occurred when the Belgian team surged forward. USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese moved far from the goal attempting to block or clear the ball, yet misstepped. Hans Vanaken capitalized on this by sending the ball past defender Tim Ream, marking Belgium’s third goal in the 57th minute.

Additionally, the US team suffered from various errors and communication issues, including losing key player Christian Pulisic in the second half. Pulisic suffered an injury that limited his mobility, forcing him to watch the rest of the match from the bench, visibly frustrated.

Belgium introduced star Romelu Lukaku during the second half. He sealed the 4-1 victory by scoring three minutes into stoppage time, setting Belgium to face Spain in the quarterfinals.

The USMNT became the third and final host nation to exit the 2026 World Cup. Despite earlier excitement, fans were disappointed with the team’s performance in the crucial match against Belgium.
