A Delta Air Lines flight reportedly collided with a firework while descending into Chicago during the Fourth of July celebrations. The pilot of flight 1076 informed air traffic control of the incident just prior to landing at Chicago Midway International Airport.

As recorded by LiveATC.net, the pilot described experiencing a ‘big bang’ as the aircraft flew at an altitude of 200 to 250 feet. The crew expressed hope that the noise was merely from a ‘mortar that went off,’ referencing a component used to launch fireworks.

The Airbus A319, which departed from Atlanta with 52 passengers and six crew members, landed safely shortly after 8:30 p.m. local time. Luckily, there were no injuries, and Delta mechanics found no damage upon inspection.

The Federal Aviation Administration and Delta have both confirmed the incident, and the FAA plans to investigate further. The control tower recording also revealed ‘multiple reports’ of similar encounters, with Chicago officials being notified.

The Associated Press sought clarification from the FAA, Chicago’s city government, and the Chicago Police Department regarding additional firework-related events on that night, but no immediate responses were available.
