ESPN’s NBA insider, Shams Charania, recently reported significant changes. The Lakers exchanged multiple future draft picks for Utah Jazz’s Walker Kessler. Plans indicate a four-year, $130 million contract offer to Kessler, positioning him as their starting center.

Additionally, the Lakers traded their previous starting center, Deandre Ayton, to the Washington Wizards, acquiring guard Jaden Hardy and several draft picks. This created speculation about who might become Kessler’s backup center.

Some undrafted rookies like Syracuse’s William Kyle III and Saint Louis’s Robbie Avila are options for the rotation. Nonetheless, veteran experience remains a priority.

As per Charania, the Lakers are considering Andre Drummond, Kevon Looney, and Jonas Valanciunas for the backup position. Each player has extensive experience and strong statistics as reserve centers.

Jonas Valanciunas, age 34, recently completed his 14th season, playing for the Denver Nuggets. His averages were 8.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game, with a 58.2% shooting efficiency.

Andre Drummond, also finishing his 14th season, played for the Philadelphia 76ers behind Joel Embiid. He recorded averages of 6.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, with a 47.2% shooting percentage.

Kevon Looney, at 30, is the youngest option, averaging 2.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game with 41.7% shooting for the New Orleans Pelicans last season. His championship tenure with the Golden State Warriors includes three NBA titles.

Looney’s championship experience may interest the Lakers, as they aim for a competitive edge in the Western Conference with Luka Doncic, Reaves, and Kessler leading. Acquiring any of these seasoned centers could enhance roster depth, addressing previous challenges in that area.
