Mexico City plans to bolster security and limit attendance at key locations for the Mexico-England World Cup match on Sunday. This action follows the death of four fans during celebrations of Mexico’s victory over Ecuador earlier this week.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada announced the security measures, revealing efforts to avoid repeat incidents that saw fans succumb to asphyxiation and cardiac arrest. Positioned as a World Cup host city, Mexican fans have been unable to attend stadiums due to high ticket prices, prompting public gatherings elsewhere.
In response to safety concerns, following an increase in cartel-related violence, authorities asserted that necessary precautions were enacted to ensure safety. Instances of death involve two women, ages 19 and 44, and a man aged 48, all dying from asphyxiation. Another 25-year-old man died in the hospital from cardiorespiratory arrest.
The Attorney General’s Office has initiated investigations into the deaths, currently open. For Sunday, attendance will be limited to maintain safety. Brugada informed that while the Angel of Independence will be freely accessible, capacity restrictions will apply.
Secretary of Public Security, Pablo Vázquez, specified that only 25,000 people can enter the Angel monument space. Overflow of fans will be directed to alternative areas on Paseo de la Reforma, featuring screens for match viewing. Similar measures apply to the Zócalo, Mexico City’s main square.
A security reinforcement of 6,000 officers is planned along Paseo de la Reforma, doubling the prior deployment. Around Estadio Azteca, 7,500 officers will be stationed, along with 3,300 in Zócalo. Vázquez highlighted a perimeter setup near the Angel of Independence to regulate entry flow. Restrictions will also encompass street vendors and delivery services, alongside strategic Metro and Metrobus line closures.
Secretary of Government César Cravioto declared a prohibition on street alcohol sales from July 5’s early morning till the following day. Consumption is only permitted in specific venues such as banquet halls and restaurants. Secretary of Civil Protection Myriam Urzúa advised against participating in popular crowd activities like “Want to Fly!” and “Shall We Swim!” due to safety risks.
England’s team recently arrived under tight security at their hotel in Santa Fe’s western region of the capital. Police officers ensured their safe arrival amidst awaiting fans. Personnel from multiple security forces shielded the team, contrasting earlier animated gatherings when Ecuador faced Mexico, with fan disruptions targeting rival sleep.
