Colson Montgomery’s Home Run Highlights White Sox Victory Over Orioles

Colson Montgomery made headlines during Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. The White Sox shortstop became the third player in team history to hit a home run that reached Eutaw Street, following Adam Dunn in 2013 and Jeff Liefer in 2001.

I didn’t even think it went over that gate, I thought it went through the gate, Montgomery said. I knew I got it pretty good, though.

Montgomery’s impressive hit came during a third inning rally in which the White Sox scored seven runs. They triumphed over the Orioles 9-3 with a crowd of 17,581 looking on. Notably, Jacob Gonzalez contributed two RBIs with a single, and Junior Perez added a three-run homer, helping the team to move ahead with a winning streak in June.

The White Sox, now with a record of 45-39, lead the American League Central by two games. This came after the Cleveland Guardians suffered a 4-2 loss to the Texas Rangers. Chicago closed June with a 13-12 record, marking back-to-back winning months for the first time since 2021.

Manager Will Venable praised the team’s consistency and energy, remarking on their ability to minimize downturns. The win also marked the end of a streak of seven consecutive road series losses.

That’s big, Venable said. Disappointing we haven’t had a road series win in that long, but it’s a great time to get it and really proud of the guys for continuing to battle on the road.

Pitcher Erick Fedde earned the victory, conceding three runs on five hits in five innings. Tyler Schweitzer then pitched four scoreless innings to secure the save, a feat last managed by a Sox pitcher in 1997.

Fedde highlighted his effective use of the sweeper pitch, which he relied heavily upon during the game. It helps when the guys give you a bunch of runs. Makes life a lot easier, he acknowledged.

Catchers like Kyle Teel are returning to form, having received strong support from players like Montgomery and Perez. Montgomery’s own homer placed him among 137 players who’ve reached Eutaw Street, and the 73rd visiting batter to do so.

Jacob Gonzalez further bolstered the lead with a two-RBI single, followed by Perez’s 409-foot three-run homer, raising the score to 8-1. Gonzalez’s contributions continued with another RBI in his double during the fourth inning, leading to the team’s first series victory over the Orioles since 2021.

In other team news, the White Sox traded Ben Peoples, a minor-league pitcher, to the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor-league catcher Ben Hartl. Peoples held a 2.39 ERA with Charlotte, while Hartl had three home runs and 16 RBIs at High-A Hub City.
