Jordan Spieth Concerned About Rising Impact of Gambling on Golf Fans

Jordan Spieth recently expressed his desire for sports fans to return to traditional ways. Before the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Illinois, Spieth addressed concerns about increasing rowdiness among golf crowds, pointing to gambling as a significant factor.

When asked about the behavior of golf audiences following Wyndham Clark’s treatment at the U.S. Open, Spieth highlighted the influence of betting. He remarked, “I do think that betting in golf is something that’s going to have to be tackled here soon.” His comments suggested a need for addressing the gambling culture in golf.

According to Spieth, the legalized betting environment, where fans have substantial wagers on players, might enhance tensions. He explained, “In golf, it’s tricky because you could actually impact the outcome if you wanted to. I don’t know of another sport that you could impact as a fan like you can golf.”

Spieth acknowledged that fan dissatisfaction is not entirely new but believes the connection with betting has grown over the past five years. He emphasized the importance of addressing this link.

The issue is linked with recent events, such as Clark’s negative reception at Shinnecock Hills and the Ryder Cup controversy at Bethpage Black. These locations are well-known for fan intensity, sparking comments from Golf Channel’s Eamon Lynch, who criticized Long Island fans for their behavior.

Since 2018, when sports gambling became legal in many states, 39 states sanctioned it. In 32 states, including Illinois, online betting is also legal, which means the impact of gambling on fan behavior may continue to grow.
