CBD Treats Gain Popularity for Calming Pets During Fireworks

Fireworks can cause anxiety in many dogs, leading owners to seek solutions like CBD treats to calm their pets. SunKissed Greenz, LLC, a CBD shop in Mokena, took action to assist dog owners ahead of the July Fourth holiday by distributing free calming CBD treats.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is distinct from THC, the psychoactive compound. The CBD products offered by SunKissed Greenz exclude THC, though products containing low THC levels are available for humans. Misty Nelson, who launched her online store during the pandemic and opened a physical location in 2022, has developed a loyal customer base, with customers bringing their dogs for both treats and affection.

Kelly Garver from New Lenox visited the shop with her 11-year-old Staffie mix, Sadie. “Sadie is particularly anxious around the 4th of July, and the treats here have been a great help,” mentioned Garver, noting their effectiveness in managing inflammation. Garver has another dog, Valerio, a Spanish greyhound rescue. She administers CBD oil to both dogs daily, appreciating its benefits during chemotherapy for her previous dog with cancer.

Garver trusts SunKissed Greenz, emphasizing that Nelson is a dog owner herself. The dog treats are prepared by Nelson’s husband, Bryan, with Misty’s assistance.

Misty Nelson’s experience with CBD began when her own dog, affected by frequent seizures, improved remarkably with CBD treatment. “The reduction in seizures gave us more years with her,” she shared. She now cares for two German shepherds, Bohdi and Utah, and highlights CBD’s safety margin and recommends gradual dosing.

Nelson not only focuses on products but hosts dog adoption events and supports organizations like NAWS and Cache Creek Animal Rescue. She also organizes dog yoga sessions and holiday fundraisers to help NAWS.

Tara Triefen from Frankfort brought her Shorkie, Smalls, to prepare for the holiday. “She dislikes fireworks, but CBD treats help her relax,” Triefen shared.

NAWS director Becca Keller emphasized keeping pets in small rooms during fireworks, with calming music and closed windows to minimize anxiety.

Veterinarian April Finan sometimes recommends CBD for anxious pets, acknowledging mixed research in the field. She is cautious with usage, emphasizing transparency about its non-FDA-approved status.

Finan’s chosen CBD is rigorously tested by third-party labs, ensuring authenticity. In some cases, she resorts to medications like Trazodone and Gabapentin for anxiety.

Ward Phillips from the Low-Cost Clinic at South Suburban Humane Society favors prescription medicines, citing more research compared to CBD products.

Both veterinarians stress the need for preparation and consultation with professionals when using CBD or any medication.
