In an intense World Cup match, Morocco emerged victorious over the Netherlands, marking the Dutch team’s earliest exit from the tournament. The thrilling encounter ended in a 1-1 draw, leading to a decisive penalty shootout.
Ismael Saibari, the hero for Morocco, scored the crucial goal in the shootout, sealing a 3-2 victory. The match saw Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou make a pivotal save against Crysencio Summerville, setting the stage for Saibari’s winning shot. Saibari’s celebration included tearing off his shirt, surrounded by jubilant teammates.
An earlier attempt by Soufiane Rahimi saw drama as Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen initially appeared to stop the shot, only to see the ball deflected into the net. Reflecting on the match, Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi emphasized the team’s efforts on the field, attributing their success to divine favor.
“We know when we do everything on the pitch, it’s God that gives something back to us as well,” said Ouahbi. “We give all the energy that we have on the field. Rahimi’s goal could have not been a goal, but it went in thankfully.”
The Netherlands exited after reaching at least the Round of 16 in 11 previous World Cups. They had made it to the quarterfinals four years ago, while Morocco had become the first African team to reach the semifinals during the same tournament.
Morocco now progresses to face Canada in the Round of 16. They previously defeated Canada 2-1 in the 2022 World Cup. During the match against the Netherlands, Morocco dominated the game at several points, while the opposing team focused on counterattacks.
Ouahbi noted the shift in perceptions, saying, “I think Morocco has gained everybody’s respect now. I saw (the Netherlands’ style of play) as a form of respect.”
Cody Gakpo scored for the Netherlands in the 72nd minute, assisted by Summerville. The goal was an emotional moment for Gakpo, who was embraced by his teammates after recently announcing a personal tragedy. Morocco’s Issa Diop equalized in the 91st minute with a clean header following a cross from Chemsdine Talbi.
Extra time yielded no significant scoring opportunities for either team. Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman made a strategic substitution by bringing in Justin Kluivert for the shootout. Despite his reputation for penalty kicks, Kluivert missed his shot, a bitter blow for the Dutch team.
“The last substitution I made was to bring in Justin (Kluivert) because he’s one of the best at penalty shootouts,” Koeman explained. “But he missed his penalty and that’s even more bitter for him and for us.”
This marked the third consecutive World Cup where the Netherlands faced elimination via penalties. Earlier, Paraguay defeated Germany in a penalty shootout, highlighting the competitiveness of this year’s tournament.
“We need to be telling ourselves that no one can stop us,” Ouahbi affirmed. “Nobody is unbeatable. If we get things wrong, we’ll go home.”
