Billionaire Bill Gates recently informed the House Oversight Committee that Jeffrey Epstein may have considered blackmailing him over extramarital affairs. This revelation emerged from a transcript of Gates’ interview, made public on Tuesday.

During his testimony on June 10, Gates asserted, “He never blackmailed me, but looking at these emails, it raises a serious probability that he contemplated blackmailing me.” The Microsoft co-founder was speaking as part of an investigation into Epstein, a convicted sex offender.

Earlier in February, Gates had acknowledged to his foundation members that he engaged in two affairs. He labeled his association with Epstein as a “huge mistake.” At a town hall meeting with staff, Gates expressed regret for his involvement, clarifying, “I did nothing illicit. I said nothing illicit.”

Further, Gates mentioned to the House members that he was aware of Epstein’s “criminal conviction of a sexual nature” at the time of their meeting. However, he admitted that he “probably should have” researched the details of the conviction thoroughly. Epstein had pleaded guilty in 2008 to charges in Florida, which required him to register as a sex offender. Gates disclosed that although he met Epstein in 2011, they had several interactions and exchanged emails during their acquaintance.

Gates, who faces no allegations of wrongdoing related to Epstein, emphasized that Epstein never introduced him to young women. After his testimony on June 10, Gates released a statement saying he “appreciated the opportunity to meet with the House Oversight Committee today and to answer all of their questions.” He added, “I support the release of all the files and hope my participation contributes to getting justice for the victims.”

On Tuesday, the committee also published a transcript of its June 9 interview with Lesley Groff, Epstein’s longtime secretary. Groff informed lawmakers that she never witnessed any illegal actions during her 18-year tenure with Epstein.
