For two youth girls’ softball teams, Father’s Day weekend in 2026 became unforgettable as emotions flared during a game. A foul ball call by the first base umpire at the USSSA Wood Grill Buffet/Everett Classic in Benton, Arkansas, led to chaos with a coach and umpire clashing in front of the players. Unlike previous incidents, some witnesses claim the umpire initiated this confrontation.
Game Situation and Dispute
The incident occurred in the fourth inning with Arkansas Pride 12 (13U) leading Tulsa Elite NEA (14U) 7-2. A Pride batter hit a ball down the first base line, which the ump declared foul. The Pride coach disagreed, and tensions rose. An exchange of words between the coach and ump escalated to physical shoves.
Response and Consequences
“Our team immediately moved to the dugout and stayed put until the situation calmed. No players ran onto the field. All parents remained on the sidelines except one assisting in reducing tensions,” the Tulsa Elite coaching staff stated on their Facebook page.
Broader Context in Youth Sports
Tensions on sports fields are rising nationwide. Fewer umpires are willing to work due to poor sportsmanship. In 2023, a survey found 69% of sports officials felt sportsmanship was declining. About 1 in 8 officials reported being assaulted during or after games.
The Tulsa Elite coach eventually decided to forfeit the game, prioritizing player safety. “My responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of our players, and removing them from that environment was the best choice,” they noted.
Efforts to get a response from the USSSA Arkansas state director have not succeeded. Joe Kinsey, Senior Director of Content at OutKick, reported the incident.
