Alabama Crimson Tide’s Challenging Path Ahead in College Football Playoff

The Alabama Crimson Tide took part in the College Football Playoff under head coach Kalen DeBoer for the first time last season. They managed to defeat Oklahoma in the initial round but faced a substantial defeat against Indiana in the quarterfinals at the Rose Bowl. In April, DeBoer secured a seven-year contract extension worth $87.7 million, with Alabama forecasting promising achievements from him in the ensuing years.

This year, the Crimson Tide aims to return to the CFP. However, challenges are anticipated, particularly with uncertainties surrounding their roster. There is a competition at quarterback, as Keelon Russell and Austin Mack vie for the starting position during training camp. Additionally, the defense has been impacted by the departure of four players to the NFL draft.

The nine-game SEC schedule poses another hurdle for Alabama. Here are three critical games that will shape DeBoer’s third season in Tuscaloosa:

Georgia at Alabama (October 10)

Alabama has had the upper hand over Georgia during the regular season in recent years. The Crimson Tide triumphed over Georgia 41-34 in 2024 and narrowly defeated them 24-21 last season in September. However, Georgia retaliated in the SEC championship, dominating Alabama 28-7. This year, Georgia appears to be in contention for the national championship, making the early October matchup a challenging test for Alabama. Improving the run game is key for Alabama, as they managed -3 yards rushing in the previous SEC championship.

Texas A&M at Alabama (October 24)

The clash between Texas A&M and Alabama might play a decisive role in determining which SEC team advances to the CFP. Texas A&M is positioned for another CFP attempt, with quarterback Marcel Reed returning. Alabama’s front seven must work to rein in Reed to secure a victory. Last season, Miami and Texas succeeded in controlling the trenches, an area where Alabama faced difficulties in major games in 2025. The home crowd is expected to be a significant advantage for Alabama.

Alabama at LSU (November 7)

LSU, with its new head coach Lane Kiffin, is likely to be the favorite by the time of this matchup, boasting a highly valued roster. Alabama faces the trial of playing at Tiger Stadium in November. The outcome may be vital for Alabama to remain in the CFP running. Their secondary will need to perform strongly against LSU’s dynamic group of receivers.
