U.S. Temporarily Lifts Iran Oil Sanctions Amid Nuclear Program Talks

The U.S. has temporarily lifted sanctions on Iranian oil, marking a notable shift in American policy. This change provides Iran with an opportunity for economic relief after years of selling oil at reduced prices to avoid U.S. penalties.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a 60-day exemption allowing Iranian oil purchases in U.S. dollars, facilitating Iran’s access to American currency. This decision comes from constructive talks between the U.S. and Iran in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.

Vice President JD Vance, who led the U.S. negotiating team, stated that Iran agreed to allow U.N. inspectors access to its nuclear sites. He called this a significant achievement towards ending Iran’s nuclear weapons program. However, President Trump on social media claimed inspectors would ensure Iran’s long-term compliance, though the involvement of nuclear inspectors traveling to Iran remains uncertain.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, stated Iran had made no new commitments for nuclear inspections. He noted any engagement with U.N. inspectors would follow existing procedures.

At a Bürgenstock press conference, Vice President Vance mentioned newly established communication channels aimed at reducing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon. Recent developments suggest reduced hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, impacting the fragile cease-fire between the U.S. and Iran.
