On Monday, two people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting in Montreal. The gunman responsible for the attack was also killed. Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the incident, which occurred in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, known for its kosher restaurants and frequented by Montreal’s Jewish community. The area includes a supermarket, shops, and a residential building.
Montreal police released a statement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the officer during their duty. The statement was posted on X. Alongside the police officer, a civilian was also killed. Police urged locals to steer clear of the area as investigations continued.
The situation unfolded around 11:30 a.m. ET. A large police presence was observable, including a police helicopter that provided aerial support. Fady Dagher, Chief of the Montreal Police Service, reported uncertainty regarding the identity and religious affiliation of the civilian victim. Details surrounding who killed the civilian remain unclear. Dagher confirmed that the suspect was shot immediately, but further information about the other victim is pending.
According to the public broadcaster Radio Canada, another officer sustained serious injuries. Dagher assured that support was available for the injured officer, stating, “We are all behind her” at a news conference held on Monday afternoon.
The identity of the fallen officer has not been disclosed, but Dagher praised him as an outstanding and passionate member of the force. Dagher conveyed that it was a profoundly sad day and described the incident as a nightmare. This marks the first loss of an officer in the line of duty for the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) since 2002.
Although there is no ongoing threat to the community, Dagher mentioned that he couldn’t confirm whether the attack was intended as an ambush. Investigations will aim to clarify this aspect.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a significant Canadian civil society organization, closely monitored the developments. CIJA advised community members to remain vigilant as further details emerge.
Quebec Premier Christine Frechette expressed her shock over the tragic events. She emphasized the importance of allowing authorities to conduct their investigations without making assumptions.
