A fire at a cold-storage warehouse in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, continued to spread smoke across the area over the weekend. The blaze, which started on Wednesday, persisted into its fifth day.
Firefighters reported progress in controlling the fire. Officials expressed hope that the smoke would soon start to dissipate. However, air quality in central Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley remained affected by the smoke’s particulates.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District maintained a warning regarding poor air quality, extending it until midday Monday. They noted that smoke might spread to Riverside and Orange Counties due to wind patterns.
On Saturday night and Sunday, particulates reached ‘very unhealthy’ levels in certain regions. The air quality agency predicted significant smoke impact north and east of the fire, particularly in the San Gabriel Valley and sections of the western Inland Empire.
Despite the conditions, major events proceeded as planned. The World Cup match between Belgium and Iran at SoFi Stadium, along with a Los Angeles Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium, continued without interruption.
The fire at the Boyle Heights warehouse, situated east of downtown Los Angeles, started on Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters have faced challenges due to the thick, freezer-like insulation of the building’s walls. Ammonia used as refrigerant and millions of gallons of frozen food added complexity to their efforts.
