Fernando Mendoza is set to begin his NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders. He joins the team after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft, a result of his impressive performance leading the Indiana Hoosiers to an undefeated season and a national championship in 2025. Mendoza also snagged the Heisman Trophy, highlighting his accomplishments in college football.
The transition to the NFL involves learning new skills and adjusting to the heightened level of play. Mendoza aims to meet these challenges head-on. He attributes some of his preparatory guidance to Tom Brady, a minority owner of the Raiders and legendary quarterback. Mendoza shared insights from Brady, emphasizing the importance of being the most competitive, demonstrating leadership, and gaining the respect of teammates.
Mendoza quoted Brady, “You need to be the toughest, both mentally and physically, and you’ve got to lead by example before earning that equity and respect from your teammates to lead effectively.”
Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is also part of the Raiders’ lineup. Although Cousins does not see himself strictly as a mentor to Mendoza, he acknowledges a mutual exchange of insights with the younger players. “I think to say I’m mentoring them is a bit of a reach, probably more of a narrative than it is the truth,” Cousins remarked. “They’re pretty good players and quite experienced, and I’m learning a lot from them too.”
Mendoza’s starting role for Week 1 remains uncertain as Cousins showcases his continued ability in the game. Cousins joined the Raiders on a two-year, $12.6 million contract during the offseason, indicating his active involvement in the team’s strategy going forward.
With the upcoming NFL season, Mendoza’s development and performance will be closely watched, as he displays potential and readiness to tackle his new role with the Raiders.
