The Reflecting Pool in Washington is showing signs of wear, with paint peeling after a recent renovation. President Donald Trump is claiming intentional damage to the pool. He shared his concerns on social media, mentioning previous vandalism of the grass surrounding the pool, as well as damage to a newly installed surface.
Trump provided no concrete evidence to support his claim. Law enforcement and maintenance agencies, including the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department, have not commented on the situation.
The renovation, directed by Trump, involved painting the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool blue in preparation for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, scheduled for June 19, 2026. Recent reports mentioned a person arrested for peeling paint from the pool, but this does not fully account for the algae blooms and loose paint observed.
Trump alleged malicious chemical use both on the National Mall and in the Reflecting Pool, aiming to damage his administration’s work. He referred to a previous incident involving suspicious numbers, “86 47,” etched into discolored grass on the Mall, potentially threatening him as the 47th president.
The attention on the pool’s condition follows a costly $14 million refurbishment ahead of the America 250 celebrations. Despite efforts to maintain a blue hue by painting the pool’s bottom, algae blooms have turned the water green again. Federal workers have treated the pool to combat algae, yet the blue paint now reveals the rocky bottom beneath.
