President Donald Trump showcased a new Air Force One aircraft, the “VC-25B Bridge,” during a private tour at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The aircraft, a Boeing 747 from Qatar, received a $400 million military upgrade, including secure communications and anti-missile systems. Featuring a new dark blue, red, and gold livery chosen by Trump, this jet replaces the traditional light blue design.
Features of the VC-25B Bridge Jet
This aircraft, a modified Boeing 747-8i, was initially a business liner for Qatar’s royal family. It retains Qatar’s luxury interiors like wood paneling and leather lounges. The Air Force opted for rapid delivery by making minimal changes to the existing interior layout.
Trump described the plane as a “flying White House” with unprecedented luxury. The new Air Force One will make its debut with a flyover in Washington, D.C., on July 4th.
Military Overhaul and New Design
L3Harris Technologies conducted an extensive military retrofit of the aircraft. It now includes futuristic defense systems and secure communications. The classic JFK-era light blue color scheme has been replaced with Trump’s favored navy-blue, red, and gold design. Initially, President Joe Biden halted this redesign but Trump reinstated it upon returning to office.
Additional government aircraft will adopt similar color schemes. Trump plans to use the new aircraft for international summits in Turkey and potentially China.
Financial Considerations
Although the plane itself was a gift, significant retrofitting costs incited debates. Congress raised concerns about unauthorized budget reallocations for the upgrades, totaling $934 million from missile defense funds. The Pentagon justified this as necessary until purpose-built replacements arrive.
Constitutional Concerns
The acquisition raised questions regarding the Foreign Emoluments Clause. Critics, including Senator Patty Murray, argue the gift violates constitutional rules. Trump dismissed these concerns, noting the deal involved an agreement for the aircraft to eventually belong to his presidential library foundation.
Existing Fleet Remains Serviceable
The current Air Force aircraft, VC-25As, will still be operational. Both the new and existing jets will be used as needed, ensuring U.S. missions run without interruption.
