Commemorative Visit

Prior to the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, Kushner visited the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery in eastern France. He honored five Jewish American soldiers from World War I by reciting the Kaddish prayer. As an Orthodox Jew, Kushner places his beliefs at the center of his diplomatic endeavors.

Advocacy and Controversy

In his role, Kushner has been outspoken about the experiences of Jews in France. Soon after his appointment in July, he criticized the French government for insufficiently addressing antisemitism. He argues the issue has only intensified, proposing that the U.S. could offer refuge to French Jews as opportunities for asylum elsewhere are limited. His strong stance has strained relations with French officials, leading to meetings with the Foreign Ministry where Kushner was reproached for intervening in national matters.

“They live in fear and they feel abandoned by this government,” Kushner stated, advocating for more relocation options to America for the Jewish community in France.

This viewpoint, originally expressed in a letter to President Emmanuel Macron, has significantly heightened tensions with the French Foreign Ministry. Despite being summoned twice for rebuke, Kushner declined both meetings. The French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, has suggested that the ambassador be barred from meeting with French officials due to his controversial statements.
