Andy Burnham Wins Special Election, Sets Sights on Labour Leadership

Andy Burnham has triumphed in a special election, marking his return to Parliament and positioning himself to challenge Keir Starmer for leadership of the Labour Party. Burnham, the current mayor of Greater Manchester, secured a parliamentary seat in Makerfield with 55% of the votes, according to The Associated Press. His leading competitor, Rob Kenyon of Reform UK, trailed behind by more than 9,000 votes.

Burnham last held a parliamentary seat in 2017. In his victory speech, he hinted at ambitions to lead the UK. He stated, “Everyone knows that politics isn’t working. Everyone can feel that the country isn’t where it should be. Tonight could, just could, be the turning point. This result will bring about a country that works fairly for everywhere and for everybody.”

The election was significant as former Labour MP Josh Simons resigned his seat intentionally for Burnham’s return. Among the candidates was “Count Binface,” known for donning a trash can on his head to promote voter turnout.

Starmer acknowledged Burnham’s success on social media, emphasizing a campaign of hope. He defended his position as Labour leader and prime minister, determined not to step aside. Starmer, who steered Labour to a 2024 landslide win, has seen his popularity wane due to a faltering economy and a scandal over receiving gifts from affluent donors.

Starmer faced backlash for appointing Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the U.S., given Mandelson’s known ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The move drew significant public criticism leading to Mandelson’s quick removal.

Labour is losing support to the Green Party while facing increasing pressure from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. Farage, connected to U.S. President Donald Trump, voiced disappointment over Burnham’s victory.

Following the election, Burnham is set to be sworn into Parliament shortly. Under Labour’s parliamentary rules, a leadership challenge can occur if a lawmaker secures support from a fifth of party members in the House of Commons. Reports indicate Burnham holds enough backing to initiate a contest.

The Associated Press reported that Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy anticipates a forthcoming discussion between Burnham and Starmer regarding future steps.
