Sunday marks a significant event in the Northern Hemisphere— the longest day of the year. This occasion is the summer solstice, initiating astronomical summer for regions north of the equator. Conversely, in the Southern Hemisphere, Sunday is the shortest day, signaling the start of winter.

The term “solstice” originates from Latin: “sol” meaning sun, and “stitium” meaning pause or stop. The summer solstice ends the sun’s progressive ascent in the sky, where it reaches its highest and longest path. For sun enthusiasts, this event signifies the beginning of shorter days, continuing until late December.

Throughout history, people have celebrated solstices through festivals and monuments. Sweden holds midsummer eve celebrations, while Stonehenge was constructed to align with the sun’s path during solstices.

Earth’s Orbit Explained

The Earth orbits the sun at an angle, causing unequal distribution of sunlight across the northern and southern hemispheres for most of the year. Solstices occur when Earth’s tilt is most extreme, either towards or away from the sun, resulting in unequal lengths of day and night.

During the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice, Earth tilts towards the sun, producing the longest day and shortest night of the year. This event occurs between June 20 and 22. In 2023, it falls on June 21. In contrast, the winter solstice involves a maximum tilt away from the sun, creating the shortest day and longest night. This falls between December 20 and 23.

Equinoxes Explained

An equinox occurs when the Earth’s tilt is neither towards nor away from the sun. This results in nearly equal sunlight across both hemispheres. On the equinox, the sun rises due east and sets due west. “Equinox” derives from Latin words for “equal” and “night,” indicating nearly equal daytime and nighttime lengths, with minor variations depending on location.

The Northern Hemisphere’s autumnal equinox can take place between September 21 and 24, while the vernal equinox can occur between March 19 and 21. The exact equinox moment is when the sun is directly above the equator.

Astronomical vs. Meteorological Seasons

The distinction between astronomical and meteorological seasons lies in their definitions. Astronomical seasons rely on Earth’s motions around the sun. Conversely, meteorological seasons pertain to weather patterns, dividing the year into three-month intervals based on temperature cycles. Under this calendar, spring begins on March 1, summer on June 1, fall on September 1, and winter on December 1.
