Italy’s foreign minister has canceled a scheduled visit to the United States due to comments made by President Donald Trump about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Trump, during an interview with Italy’s La7 broadcaster, claimed that Meloni pleaded for a photograph with him at the G7 summit held earlier this week.
The G7 summit, a gathering of world leaders, took place between Monday and Wednesday. Trump remarked, “She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her.”
Antonio Tajani, Italy’s foreign minister, described Trump’s comments as “serious and offensive,” emphasizing that they were an insult to “all of Italy.” Tajani had planned to visit the U.S. on Sunday and Monday.
Prime Minister Meloni quickly addressed the issue on social media. She expressed her astonishment and declared Trump’s version of events as fabricated, stating, “Neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
Updates on this developing story will follow.
