Unexpected Hero Emerges in Championship Game
Libertyville senior outfielder Carson Holmes faced a challenging period before becoming the unlikely hero in the Class 4A state championship game. Despite previous accolades, Holmes had not been performing well recently. He entered the game at Wintrust Field in Joliet without a hit in ten at-bats, striking out six times. Holmes acknowledged his struggle, explaining, “I was slumping a little bit.”
The Decision to Change Tactics
Holmes decided to use his old bat, which had been his go-to choice the previous year, hoping to turn things around. “It was more of a mental cleansing than anything else,” he said. “What I was doing wasn’t working, so I figured I’d try something else.” His decision paid off when he connected for a single that brought junior pitcher Madden Cotts home for the winning run, securing a 7-6 victory over Maine South and Libertyville’s second consecutive state title.
Belief in Teamwork
Senior shortstop Trevor Wallace, who had returned to the dugout just before Holmes’s hit, overheard teammates expressing confidence once they saw Holmes with his old bat: “He’s got his old bat. Watch, he’s going to get a hit.” Holmes had consistently batted third, maintaining his place even during struggles, due to the team’s unwavering trust. Holmes remarked, “Even though I wasn’t playing well, I knew that the team would have my back.” The team had entered the playoffs on uncertain footing, yet maintained strong camaraderie, capturing consecutive titles by emphasizing collective effort.
Coach Thompson’s Strategy
Some spectators might have thought Coach Matt Thompson was altering tactics when Holmes re-entered after being replaced in left field. In reality, Thompson was reinforcing Holmes’s role in the lineup. “During some ups and downs, we had talked to him and reiterated to him that ‘you’re our guy,’” Thompson said, explaining why Holmes remained a key player despite recent setbacks.
Memorable Achievement
In the final moments, senior outfielder Jack Cenar scored on a balk, providing Holmes a brief pause before his pivotal hit. Holmes’s single was crucial as Maine South scored another run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Post-game, Holmes received the game ball, adding to other cherished trophies from his softball journey. Reflecting on the event, Holmes noted, “I’ve probably watched video of that last at-bat about 30 times, and there are recaps all over social media.” The victory exemplified their determination and teamwork, marking a significant milestone in Holmes’s high school career.
