Grapes on the Green: A Celebrated Annual Wine Event in Northbrook

What started as a simple wine tasting event for adults in downtown Northbrook has transformed into a cherished annual tradition. On June 20, Grapes on the Green returns for its fourth year at Village Green Park. This event is organized by the Village of Northbrook and the Northbrook Park District. From 4 to 8 p.m., adults can enjoy an evening featuring wine tastings, games, light snacks, and live music.

Guitarist and vocalist Peter Warren will entertain attendees with a mix of jazz, bossa nova, instrumentals, and contemporary tunes. Mike Goodman, President of the Northbrook Park District Board, shared the community’s excitement for this adults-only event. “We created this event in response to the community’s desire for adults-only events,” he noted, “and it’s been exciting to see people respond with such enthusiasm year after year.”

As Northbrook marks its 125th anniversary, President Kathryn Ciesla commented on how this event exemplifies the community’s unique qualities. “Grapes on the Green brings people together in the heart of our community,” she said, highlighting “the vibrant spirit” during the best season.

Karie Angell Luc/Pioneer Press captured moments at Grapes on the Green on June 17, 2023, in Northbrook’s Village Green Park.

Previously, the event has attracted hundreds to the downtown park at Shermer and Meadow Roads. Tasting tickets cost $49 and offer 12 one-ounce wine samples, provided by the family-owned Chicago Wine store. Each ticket also includes a tote bag with a signature wine glass commemorating the 125th anniversary and a snack box with chocolate, crackers, dried fruit, and nuts.

Mike Widmaier, co-owner of Chicago Wine and veteran of the industry for over 25 years, explained his involvement since the first event. “It’s just a great time, and it’s a great community event, that’s the bottom line,” he said. This year will showcase nine wine varieties, such as the 2021 Torres ‘Gran Coronas’ Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva from Spain and a 2025 La Croix Rose from Provence, France.

When organizing tastings, Widmaier aims for a mix of styles and international selections. “No matter what you’re into, you’re going to find something that you’ll love and want to hone in on,” he stated.

Attendees can expect mid-tier priced wines, offering value beyond regular grocery store options. Non-tasting tickets are available for $30, including the featured items. Only adults aged 21 and over can attend, as the event is strictly adults-only. Infants, children, pets, and outside beverages are not allowed. Seating is limited, so participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets.
