Groundbreaking and Construction Progress
The new BJ’s Wholesale Club in Portage has seen construction underway, with a ceremonial groundbreaking held recently. This 100,000-square-foot store will soon employ between 100 and 150 people in both full-time and part-time roles, according to company spokesperson Ryan Carney.
Why Portage? A Growing Community
Founded over 40 years ago in Massachusetts and named after Beverly Jean, the daughter of a founder, BJ’s has focused its attention on Portage, which ranks as the third-largest city in Northwest Indiana. Positioned on the eastern edge of the Chicago market, Portage presents itself as a growing community, noted Carney.
Across from BJ’s location on Airport Road, a new Target is also in development. Dan Botich, Portage’s Redevelopment Director, supports the view of the city’s development boom. He believes that residential expansion fuels commercial growth: “Wherever there are rooftops, development follows.”
Future Projects and City Planning
Portage anticipates the creation of 1,200 new housing units over the next few years, with other residential projects currently being reviewed. Mayor Austin Bonta plans to expand the city further south and southeast. In line with this plan, developers have agreed to allocate space for a new fire station, ensuring safety for new residents. Additionally, a potential police substation location is considered beneficial.
Economic Expansion and Commercial Interest
As work continues in front of the new BJ’s Wholesale Club, Botich describes Portage’s economic position as attractive to industries, manufacturers, and retailers. This growth attracts Illinois residents and businesses, keen on moving to the area. Botich humorously stated his economic development needs are minimal, requiring just enough to show gratitude to Illinois policymakers who drive these movements.
Portage’s Ongoing Success
Andy Maletta, Executive Director of the Portage Economic Development Corp., highlighted Portage’s consistent growth, which attracts new restaurants and businesses. Portage finds itself appealing, with successful outlets like Applebee’s and Texas Roadhouse setting the trend here.
The U.S. 6 corridor is currently favored by commercial businesses, believing “if it’s good enough for Target, it’s good enough for them.” For Maletta, it means a more welcoming city, ready for business.
The Significance of BJ’s Presence
The introduction of BJ’s Wholesale Club fills a gap in Porter County, as there are no other wholesale warehouses like Costco or Sam’s Club. BJ’s aims to enhance the community with the promise of regular donations to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.
BJ’s Expansion Strategy
With 267 locations and four new stores opened last month, BJ’s continues expanding. Spokesperson Carney emphasized the company’s rapid growth, eyeing 25-30 new clubs every couple of years. The Portage location is set to open this winter alongside locations in Kentucky and Florida. Already present in Carmel and Noblesville, Indiana, BJ’s offers a unique shopping experience with its grocery section, encouraging members to consider it for weekly groceries and offering up to 20% savings on groceries.
BJ’s membership begins at $40 annually, reinforcing their commitment to community involvement and customer savings. This approach, Carney said, helps set BJ’s apart from competitors like Sam’s Club and Costco.
