John Healey, Britain’s Defense Secretary, unexpectedly resigned on Thursday. He accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of inadequate defense investment, leaving the country vulnerable.

Healey, a close ally of Starmer, communicated his concerns in a letter shared on social media. He stated that the Prime Minister’s Defense Investment Plan falls short of necessary military funding.

“Without a DIP that meets the moment in this way, I am being forced to make decisions that would reduce the readiness of our Forces and increase the risk to personnel on operations, and could make the country less safe,” Healey wrote.

Healey criticized Starmer’s plan to raise military spending to 2.68% of GDP by 2030, contrasting it with the previously discussed 3.5% target. He expressed the need for greater resources to ensure national security.

After efforts to address the issue with Starmer, Healey chose to resign, stating he could not accept a budget that compromises the country’s defense capabilities.
