Physician Shortage in Southeastern Region Leads to Extended Wait Times

The southeastern part of the state struggles with a serious lack of doctors. This shortage forces patients to endure longer delays for medical care.

Incident Highlights Rural Healthcare Challenges

In February, a serious medical situation unfolded in a rural North Carolina middle school. A child with no previous health issues experienced a severe allergic reaction. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) quickly responded to the situation.

At the request of the parent, EMS began transporting the child to a major medical center located over 30 minutes away in Durham. However, during the journey, the child’s condition worsened dramatically. Vital signs plummeted, prompting an immediate decision by the paramedics.

They chose to divert to a closer hospital in Roxboro, only a few minutes away.

Upon arrival at the emergency department, the child needed several medications and extensive supportive care to stabilize her condition.
