Indonesian authorities have detained two Russian nationals in connection with a drug smuggling case in Bali. The arrests followed a high-speed car chase involving several pedestrian casualties, as reported on Sunday by officials.
The suspects, a 52-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, were apprehended while attempting to smuggle nearly eight kilograms (18 pounds) of hashish from Thailand, according to a statement by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN).
We have seized the evidence, 7.8 kilograms of hashish,
stated BNN chief Suyudi Ario Seto.
Officials revealed that the woman, known by her initials “KK,” had initially arrived at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport. She then traveled to Bali in a rental car to meet the man, identified as “SK,” at a seaport on Friday.
The agency reported that the man picked up the woman and later left her, as well as the suitcase containing the drugs, at an undisclosed location before attempting to evade police capture. The man was pursued by authorities and drove recklessly, hitting local residents during the chase, before being stopped.
Both individuals were taken into custody on Friday. BNN published images of the arrested suspects and a photograph of the suitcase allegedly carrying the drugs.
A further investigation is ongoing to ascertain if the duo is connected to a broader drug trafficking network. Indonesia is known for its stringent drug laws, including a potential death penalty for traffickers; however, the country has upheld a moratorium on executions for several years.
Several traffickers remain on death row, with the last execution taking place in 2016. This execution involved one Indonesian and three Nigerians sentenced for drug offenses. In 2024, Indonesia repatriated Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines, removing her from death row, and returned five members of the “Bali Nine” drug ring to Australia.
Incidents involving drug smuggling in Bali have been recurrent. Recent cases include two British men convicted in March for cocaine trafficking, receiving prison terms of nine and 11 years. Another notable arrest occurred last August when a Peruvian woman was caught attempting to smuggle cocaine into Bali.
