Steve Hilton and Xavier Becerra Head to California’s General Election

California Gubernatorial Race

Republican candidate Steve Hilton will face off against former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra in the general election. Hilton seeks to become California’s first Republican governor in 15 years. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is term-limited, leaving an open seat that Republicans aim to claim. The GOP has largely united behind Hilton, leveraging public concern over illegal immigration and crime to strengthen his candidacy.

Decision Desk reported Hilton’s advancement, placing him second after a preliminary count. On Truth Social, President Donald Trump praised Hilton’s performance. According to the Associated Press, Hilton received 25.1% of the votes, while Democrat Tom Steyer had 22.4%, with 83% of the votes counted as of early Tuesday morning.

Challenges and Polls

Polls suggest Hilton is a viable contender, yet he faces significant challenges. A SurveyUSA poll prior to the election placed Hilton and Steyer at 20% each, with Becerra at 17%. An Emerson College poll showed a different outcome, with Becerra at 28%, Steyer at 22%, and Hilton in third with 21%.

There is potential for Democrats to consolidate their support behind Becerra, widening Hilton’s gap as the election progresses. While Hilton has consolidated Republican backing, he must attract independents and some Democrats to his camp due to the state’s Democratic majority. Kalshi odds indicated Hilton has a 7% chance of winning, compared to Becerra’s 70%.

Hilton’s Campaign Focus

As a former Fox News host, Hilton is a known figure with a distinct ideological stance. He promises to lower taxes, address crime, and challenge Democratic policies. Trump supports Hilton, suggesting he can provide the changes California needs. Hilton also pledges to investigate Governor Newsom over fraud allegations if elected.

Despite GOP unity, Hilton needs broader appeal to succeed. California’s voter registration records show twice as many registered Democrats compared to Republicans. Hilton aims to gain support from independents and dissatisfied Democrats, especially those critical of the economy or Newsom’s leadership.

Republican History in California

The last Republican to win the governor’s race in California was Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006. At that time, the political landscape was more balanced. Now, Democrats have a significant registration advantage, with over 10 million Democrats versus around 5 million Republicans in the state.

Fundraising Battle

Hilton’s fundraising efforts have amassed over $7 million this year, with nearly half of the contributions received after April 19. This figure surpasses Becerra’s fundraising, which stands at over $6 million. However, Steyer leads with a massive campaign fund exceeding $160 million.

Hilton’s potential success hinges on expanding his voter base, reaching independents, and capturing Democratic support necessary to compete effectively against seasoned politicians like Becerra.

Becerra’s Campaign

Xavier Becerra advanced to California’s November gubernatorial election, gaining traction through his extensive public service record. Emphasizing affordability concerns like housing and energy prices, Becerra positions himself as a reliable alternative to Trump. His victory could mark a historical first, as he may become California’s first Latino governor in over a century.

While praised for his experience, Becerra faces scrutiny over his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and his time in the Biden administration. Yet, his campaign continues to resonate with a significant portion of the electorate.
