Several diabetes experts faced removal by police at a prominent medical conference. Their removal happened as they distributed an editorial criticizing the Trump administration’s impact on scientific research.
The incident occurred during the American Diabetes Association meeting in New Orleans. This was shortly before Dr. Jay Bhattacharya was scheduled to speak. An organizer later announced a change in speakers, with a senior adviser from the N.I.H. taking Dr. Bhattacharya’s place.
The editorial, featured in the association’s journal Diabetes Care, addressed the effects of N.I.H. budget cuts and other administrative actions on diabetes research. Security intervened as researchers, like Aaron Kelly from the University of Minnesota, distributed these materials. A video by MedPage Today reveals tensions with security, including a uniformed officer confronting an expert.
Despite security challenges, the researchers attempted re-entry. However, police warned them of potential trespassing and arrest if they returned, stated Justin Ryder, a researcher at Northwestern Medicine.
A representative from the Louisiana State Police confirmed event organizers requested their intervention. The impacted researchers reported losing their convention badges and being banned from further participation.
