Casey Wasserman, chairman of the LA28 Olympic Games, continues in his role amid calls for resignation. The controversy surrounding him stemmed from emails linked to Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein, unearthed in February. Although some politicians and stars from his talent agency urged him to step down, Wasserman has remained steadfast in his position.
Asked whether he considered resigning, Wasserman responded with a firm “No and yes.” Regarding his conversations with Mayor Karen Bass, a vocal critic, he stated that they maintain regular, productive discussions focused on delivering successful Games for Los Angeles.
Mayor Bass is campaigning for re-election and has progressed to the November runoff. Spencer Pratt and City Councilmember Nithya Raman are competing for a spot on the ballot. The political climate in California remains dynamic as the state prepares for gubernatorial elections with candidates Steve Hilton and Xavier Becerra in tight competition.
Wasserman highlighted the organizing committee’s adaptability through political changes since the bid began in 2015. He emphasized the importance of relationships over personalities in maintaining partnerships with local, state, and federal entities.
Chosen by former Mayor Eric Garcetti to lead the Olympic effort, Wasserman has recently limited public appearances. During the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games, he participated in a mandatory presentation but offered no further comments. Despite external pressure, the LA28 executive committee affirmed their support for Wasserman, commending his decade-long leadership.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed strong confidence in the leadership of LA28 after a coordination commission visit. Nicole Hoevertsz, chair of the IOC coordination commission, stated, “The team is ready. The Games are on track.” Record sponsorship and ticket sales underscore LA28’s successful preparations. Sponsorship deals have reached $2 billion, closing in on the $2.5 billion goal. Ticket sales passed 4 million, indicating robust interest in the privately funded Games.
Fans can still register for the ticket lottery for the next ticket release in August. Current sales allow for general venue sections without specific seat assignments. LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover assured fans that there would be no unexpected changes, as seen in past events like the FIFA World Cup. Hoover noted learning from FIFA’s operations while acknowledging the scale of the 2028 Olympics, which will host nearly 11,000 athletes followed by the extensive Paralympic Games.
