Highland sophomore infielder Nate Phillips has garnered expectations as he continues to impress on the field. Sam Michel, the Trojans’ coach in his first season but a former assistant, has formed a strong bond with Phillips over the years. Michel knew early on that Phillips was a talented player and aimed to ensure his commitment to Highland. “In a world where players often transfer, whispers circulated about his future here,” Michel remarked. He made efforts to connect with Phillips when he was an eighth grader and watched him play during the summer. Phillips joined the Senior Babe Ruth team and proved his capability against older players. He demonstrated his potential from day one as a starter.
As a freshman, Phillips contributed significantly to Highland’s first sectional title since 2000, starting at third base. This season, Michel appointed him as captain and positioned him at shortstop. Michel challenged Phillips to perform at a high level, preparing him for college baseball. “Last year was about settling in; this year is about rising to the challenge,” Michel explained. Phillips embraced the tough-love approach, valuing the preparation for his future. “He’s teaching me how it’s going to be,” Phillips acknowledged.
Phillips has excelled in his sophomore season. He leads the team in various statistics, including a .385 batting average and a .615 slugging percentage. His impressive performance has helped Highland clinch the sectional title again, with more competitive aspirations for the regional game against NorthWood. Michel expects a strong match against NorthWood, expressing confidence in their prospects.
“Statistically, he’s the guy I imagine everybody else circles,” Michel stated. He challenged Phillips to adapt his play style, moving past his comfort zone to take on bunt opportunities.
Phillips has transitioned to shortstop following an injury to junior shortstop Danijel Zekavica. He has become more comfortable in the position. “I’ve really grown into it,” he shared. His teammates, including junior right fielder Logan Finch, admire Phillips’ contributions. Finch expressed, “He’s a great all-around player, playing shortstop and pitching. Nate’s determination to win and being a good teammate stand out.”
Having grown up playing with Brady Boyd and Logan Finch, Phillips is rooted in team spirit and perseverance. His improved batting average from .270 last season highlights his progression. Michel emphasized changing mindsets after losing in the regional round previously. The Trojans anticipate a competitive game against NorthWood, looking to build on their success.
